Philmont-Style Dining Fly Rig – a strong, scout-style tarp shelter used for cooking, eating, or gathering outdoors.

🌲⛺ This diagram shows how to set up a Philmont-Style Dining Fly Rig – a strong, scout-style tarp shelter used for cooking, eating, or gathering outdoors. Let me walk you through it step by step:

---

🪢 What You’ll Need

1 tarp (about 12x12 ft)

8 stakes

2 poles (hiking sticks or trekking poles)

2 × 25 ft paracord lines (for the sides)

1 × 40 ft paracord line (for the ridge)

Small sticks (to lock knots in place)

---

🔧 Step-by-Step Setup

Step 1 – Ridge Line

Run a 40 ft paracord ridge line under the center of the tarp, between two poles.

Secure each end of the ridge line to poles using a Clove Hitch.

---

Step 2 – Attach Tarp to Ridge Line

Thread the tarp grommets onto the ridge line.

Use Lark’s Head Knots with small sticks to lock them in place so the tarp doesn’t slide.

---

Step 3 – Side Guy Lines

Tie 25 ft paracord lines to each side grommet of the tarp.

Stake them out at an angle.

Secure them with a Taut-Line Hitch so you can slide and adjust the tension easily.

---

Step 4 – Corner Anchoring

Use one long cord woven through the corner grommets.

Pull it outward and stake with Taut-Line Hitches for adjustability.

---

Step 5 – Adjust & Tighten

Move stakes and slide knots until tarp is tight and angled.

Poles should lift the middle high, creating a big shaded area beneath.

---

✅ Why This Setup Works

Clove Hitch: Quick, strong tie-off to poles.

Lark’s Head + stick: Prevents tarp from sliding on ridge line.

Taut-Line Hitch: Adjustable tension – crucial when rope stretches or ground shifts.

Open design: Tall center and angled sides shed rain, give shade, and allow airflow.
